Geriatrics is depressing.
It has been a long, hard, tiring day..
One of my patients has died today in the afternoon.
It is true what people say, when u dying, ur mouth will be dry.. and thats what I saw in his last moments.
His mouth is gaping open, his breathing - a characteristic Cheyne-stokes. A frail 85 y.o. gentleman, With a DNR order in place.
'Cheyne-Stokes respiration
n. An abnormal pattern of breathing characterized by a gradual increase in depth and sometimes in rate to a maximum depth, followed by a decrease resulting in apnea, usually seen in comatose individuals having diseased nervous centers of respiration.'

He doesnt seem to have family member around, just an old female friend. At least someone was there...
There is an atmosphere of eeriness when ure with someone whos dying.. all the while i was there i couldnt help but wonder .. any malaikats here.. wonder what they're doing to him now... wonder what he is thinking now...
and then time of death was announced.
Good luck dear Mr X
I'll miss u on ward rounds tomorrow.
Geriatrics is depressing....
