what's up with surgery?

cakap-cakap ilman aiman

if u do a random survey on any medical students on what they aspire to be after finishing medical school, then surgery wouldn't normally appear on their top 3 list. for most people, surgery would be down below, rite next to hmmmm... psychiatry perhaps or pathology? i don't know about the true fact & figures or any statistical analysis done but this is the impression that i got from recent chats with friends & acquaintances of a similar background. in a nutshell, the complains & reasons cited for not doing surgery are:
  • surgeons are cold hearted egoist. they think they are better than others. their arrogance fills up the room
  • surgeons are the exclusive only boys club. some consider that female surgeons are a joke.
  • surgery takes too much of ur working hours. plus, most hours are inflexble.
  • surgeons require dexterity
  • i don't have the built of a surgeon
though i hate to admit it, but some or maybe most of the feedback that were thrown in are true at least to a certain extent depending on how u look at it. u see... for surgeons.. they are trained as surgeons instead of being born as one. facility with knot tying and sewing is handy, but in fact some of the most wise and revered surgeons in practice today were not known for their dexterity when they were medical students or junior surgery residents. instead... intelligence, conscientiousness.... creativity, courage & perseverance on behalf of ur patients are the critical factors. and they weight far more than having the "right personality" fit for what i would say a misleading portrayal of the classic surgeon.

becoming a good surgeon is a life long process. thoughtful reflection on the outcomes of ur decisions and those of others will gradually give u the most important quality..."good surgical judgment' as i would put it. the field of surgery needs a rich variety of motivated medical students to ensure that the spots of surgeons are maintained within equal ratio. so, to some of u out there..... u know u got the talent... u know u have it in u, so why not invest it in surgery. who knows u could go further than ur initial expectation. there's no harm in saying YES to surgery!!!

and lastly, just something trivial, if u've noticed, most shows done based on a medical environment.. surgeons normally get the center stage like in grey's anatomy... scrubs... house.... just to name a few. and i wonder why that is the case ??? =P

at this point of time, i'm incline to pursue surgery-related as my carrier.. can't really decide which sub-specialty though..

i don't really agree with most, if not all, of the negatives of surgery.. it's not pathognomonic.. i say its 50-50.. some physicians / medical consultants / paediatricians / etc2 can be cold hearted egoist at times.. and some surgeons can be madly humorous and baik hati.. they can act as your guidelines but at the end of the day, it's entirely up to you to choose which path suits you best.. don't write off surgery because of the personality and character of the surgeons you work with or attached to..

and in reality, nowadays there is more than 60-40 in terms of girls and boys in the class.. so i bet there'll be more female surgeons in the future..

and regardless which field you continue to practice in, remember that we work together as a team.. no specialty is superior or better than another and vice versa..

saya sokong anda mahu masuk surgical field. hehe.

not long ago.. the sexism in surgery cause a huge debate between two of the most opinionated people in our class.

the girls are furious when some of the lads are rubbing it to their face...

and if beauty is an issue, no worries.. we have burgundy coloured scrubs now.. so u'll look pretty in that with a matching floral hat =)

like some of my colleagues said, the colour of the scrub is an important factor to be considered!

surgical specialty is indeed a cool specialty..its one of the areas that u are fascinated with when u watch television when ur a kid and dreaming to be doing that.. its the condition and brutal(maybe) nature of its training to be a surgeon is what put people off mostly girls i guess. however, with that said, don't let an uncool and old cranky surgeon put u off the specialty. if u like it and think ur suited for then by all means go for it lah kan. just like paediatrics, just becoz there will be cranky kids and anxious parents, don't let that deter you from following what u find enjoyable doing as a career.
peace!

oh n aiman, u partially salah la.. greys anatomy je yg purely surgical based k... scrubs ade campur2, turk ngn mamat yg suke high 5 tu je yg surgeon. and House is based on Internal Medicine. Another one yg famous is ER which is emergency medicine..
kekeke..

i like Emergency Medicine, tapi its a subspecialty of Surgery. i like to know a few about a lot of things. with EM u dont know wuts coming ur way! best.

Surgery i feel now too specialised nowadays, and ull end up doing the same things again again n again. in a way ull be very good at one thing tapi...

dulu aku nak jadi surgeon, tapi being seorang yg pikir panjang, terpikir jugak how im going to spend time with my gorgeous wife and 4 anak kami (2 laki, 2 pompuan). and nak ajar diorang muqadam. and nak pergi taman berkelah.

so 9am-5pm is my target. people say Emergency tak gaji tinggi, tapi xper. talking to doctors, things are looking good for me.

im still keeping my options open, mana tahu.. bujang ke tua ke, then boleh la surgery. n loaded. beli ferrari satu.
